The fifth annual Lions 5K returned to Newton South High School on Sunday morning, drawing 294 finishers for the Newton South Booster Club’s signature fundraiser for the school’s athletic programs (results). Fig City News has a gallery of over 600 photos of the event and of most finishers.

“Gabe M.”, age 31, of Boston, won overall in 16:40, a 5:21-per-mile pace. Liam Sakakeeny, 19, of Newton was runner-up in 17:11, leading a cluster of high-school-aged finishers near the front including Carl Munshi (17), Jack Holland (16), and Benjamin Simeone (16), all of Newton. Anelle Chernin, 36, (town unlisted), was the first woman across the line, placing 11th overall in 19:25.

Running through the streets around the high school, the Lions 5K has become a community staple since its 2022 debut, which drew about 300 runners; the 2024 race had 341 finishers. Proceeds support equipment, facilities, and programs across Newton South athletics.
