Emily Craven runs the Boston Marathon again to fund Fig City News summer intern program

Emily Craven — Newton North HS ’22, now studying at University of Vermont — was the primary fundraiser for last year’s Fig City News summer internship program, and she’s back with a higher goal. On April 20, Emily will once again run the Boston Marathon to raise $8,500 for the Fig City News summer internship program — now in its fourth year.

Last year, Fig City News was able to hire six student interns, funded by Emily’s 2025 Boston Marathon campaign success and the Rotary Club of Newton. These interns wrote 34 articles for the benefit of the Newton community.

Having raised $4,150 so far, Emily is already 48% of the way to her higher goal of $8,500 for this year.

What drives Emily

Emily is excited to create the funding for next summer’s interns because “Fig City’s intern program supports young journalists and gives them an opportunity to get real field experience while providing them an outlet for their voices to be heard. I’ve seen their work. They bring high-quality local news to Newton, which benefits us all. It’s a tough time for journalism, and I’m proud to be a part of building it up.”

She added, “I have personally been so fortunate to have been given opportunities to gain field experience related to my own career, and I know how beneficial it can be to have those experiences as a student. It also means a lot to me to support a program that directly works with students from my former high school. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to give back to my community in this way.”

Taking it in stride

Emily has run eight marathons — in Rhode Island, Texas, Florida, Vermont, Louisiana, and Massachusetts, and her 9th marathon will be her second time running the Boston Marathon. She noted, “I am extremely excited to be running a race through my hometown for the second time. Last year’s race was so meaningful, as I got to run on the streets where I found my love for running. I am so excited to get to run this race again.”

All are invited to contribute to Emily’s campaign supporting the Fig City News summer intern program. Then on April 20, join the crowds on the Boston Marathon route and cheer her on!
