The Public Facilities Committee met on Wednesday, April 22. See the report and meeting video.
Held
- Day Street, Fuller Street, and Commonwealth Avenue intersection redesign — 8-0. Commissioner of Public Works Shawna Sullivan noted that the temporary roadway worked well during the marathon with no complaints and that the department continues to meet with the neighborhood to develop a solution.
- Request to review and clarify public way improvements requiring City Council approval — 7-0 (Councilor Leary not voting). A councilor presented proposed language changes that would have required City Council approval for more public works projects, arguing the changes would have resulted in projects like the Day-Fuller intersection being handled differently. Commissioner Sullivan countered that the proposed changes would significantly slow DPW operations since paving and similar contracts would need Council approval. Multiple councilors expressed support for thresholds rather than blanket requirements.
- Request for City Council participation in gas reduction planning with Newton’s Sustainability Team — 7-0 (Councilor Leary not voting). A councilor described a plan to limit gas use in Newton that began in 2024 and is now nearing a memorandum of understanding. Leadership of the project has moved to the Mayor’s Office, which the councilor supports, though she believes the City Council should be a participant once planning meetings begin. The committee discussed funding streams for pilot projects, funding for gas pipe removal through the Gas System Enhancement Program, and the accessibility of gas line maps.
