City Council Meetings – Week of 5/31/2026

Land Use Committee will meet in person (City Hall, Council Chambers Room 207) and virtually (Zoom link) on Tuesday, June 2 at 7PM. The agenda includes:

  • Working session to discuss proposed conditions for special permit to allow three stories, to exceed height, and associated parking waivers at 1100-1102 Beacon Street (no public comment). Petition documents. Planning Memo.
  • Appointments: Barbara Gruenthal, Liz Mirabile, Bruce McVittie, and Paul Giragos to the Riverside Neighborhood Liaison Committee

  • Request for development of a new resident welcome packet with information on city opportunities
  • Requesting update on leaf-blower landscaper registration and enforcement ordinance
  • Review of Newton City Charter
  • Resolution Declaring the City of Newton’s Support for Newton’s Transgender, Gender Diverse, and LGBTQIA+ Community

Public Safety & Transportation Committee will meet in person (City Hall, Room 205) and virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, June 3 at 7PM. The agenda includes:

  • Semi-annual public auto inspections
  • Appropriation of $225,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash for Police firearm equipment replacement
  • Appropriate and expend $105,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash to support the Police Department
  • Endorsement of MA Legislature Bill to authorize traffic cameras

Public Facilities Committee will meet in person (City Hall, Room 204) and virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, June 3 at 7PM. The agenda includes:

  • Authorization for potential lease for solar energy generation at Burr Elementary School, 191 Pine Street
  • Authorization to transfer $277,499 from the Energy Stabilization Fund for heat pumps at Fire Station 2
  • Transfer of $100,000 for increased water and sewer usage
  • Appropriation of up to $2,792,700 from Water Budget Reserves for water main improvements
  • Transfer of $900,000 for improvements to roadways, sidewalks, and ramps
  • Appropriate and expend $3,000,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash for Transportation and Paving Improvement Program
  • Appropriation of $135,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash to complete upgrades to the fuel stations at Crafts Street and Elliot Street Yards
  • Acceptance of a low-interest loan of $4,329,664 from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust State Revolving Fund for stormwater projects at Cold Spring Park, Cabot Dog Park, and potentially Braceland Park
