  • Inauguration …of Mayor, City Council, and School Committee on Thursday at noon at City Hall

City Council

City Council will meet on Thursday at 12PM in the City Council Chamber for the inauguration of Mayor, City Council, and School Committee. The Inauguration Docket includes:

  • Acceptance of Rules and Orders
  • Election of a President
  • Election of a Vice President
  • Election of a President Emeritus
  • Assignment of Seats
  • Appointment of Steve Curley as the City Comptroller
  • Appointment of Drew Willison as the City Clerk/Clerk of the Council

The New Docket includes:

  • Special permit and site plan approvals to:
    • Modify existing approval and construct a new automotive service station canopy, replace a freestanding sign, and grant related waivers at 14 Elliot Street
    • Raze the existing structure to construct a three-story single-family dwelling exceeding the maximum FAR at 89 Redwood Road
    • Construct a mudroom and entry landing, extending the nonconforming front setback and FAR at 355 Walnut Street
  • Discuss suspending or changing Village Center Overlay Districts near the Auburndale and West Newton Commuter Rail stations until work has begun to make the stations accessible for people with disabilities
  • Transferring the City’s economic development function and staff from the Planning Department to the Mayor’s Office
  • Pre-budget planning session with the Planning Department, Inspectional Services Department and CPA Program Manager
  • Discuss priorities for Zoning and Planning Committee for the upcoming Council term
  • Possible zoning and ordinance amendments to enhance preservation of existing homes
  • Discuss the size and configuration of future City Councils
  • Create a new Arts and Culture Department and rename Parks, Recreation & Culture
  • Changes in procedures and ordinances to:
    • Ensure consideration of tree preservation before the design and permitting process
    • Improve reporting of tree loss, preservation, and canopy data
    • Extend tree protection to single- and two-family lots
    • Apply abutter notification requirements to all Tree Permit applications
  • Appointment of Meryl Kessler as the Director of a new Arts and Culture Department
  • Appeals of Traffic Council decisions to:
    • Eliminate the left-turn prohibition from Beacon Street eastbound into the Langley Road municipal parking lot, on a trial basis
    • Extend the Langley Road (Triangle) municipal parking lot / Newton Centre Plaza configuration
    • Create a no-parking zone on Bristol Road
  • Public auto license renewal for Don’s Car Service
  • Class 2 Auto Dealer licenses for New England Motor Mart, Motorcars of Boston Inc., Grand Auto Sales, and Apex Motors Group
  • Clarification of public way improvements requiring City Council approval and abutter notifications
  • Discussion of the Day Street / Fuller Street / Commonwealth Avenue intersection redesign
  • Appointment of Alejandro Valcarce as Commissioner of Public Buildings
  • Eversource petition for a grant of location to install a pole on Rumford Avenue
  • Transfer of $300,000 to fund two new positions in the Mayor’s Office (Chief of Community Services and Chief of Staff) and temporary funding for a period of overlap for a new Chief Financial Officer
  • Workers’ compensation claim and review of the City’s workers’ compensation program
  • FY2027–FY2031 Supplemental Capital Improvement Plan and the FY2027–FY2031 five-year financial forecast.
  • Proposed reuse of the City-owned parcel at 169 Grove Street and 136 Hancock Street

School Committee

School Committee will be inaugurated on Thursday, January 1 at 12PM in the City Council Chamber. The Committee is not scheduled to meet this week.
