Newton Conversations: Let’s talk!

We are writing to introduce Newton Conversations, a group that envisions a city where civil discourse thrives, and diverse perspectives are respected with open minds and thoughtful engagement.

Newton Conversations evolved from discussions among residents over the past several years about how to foster civil discourse on issues facing the city. Our first group was trained in the Reflective Structured Dialogue process by Essential Partners, an organization that helps people build relationships and increase understanding across differences.

With support from the City, we engaged in a two-day training session with Essential Partners and have met regularly to shape our mission and the direction of the program. We have benefited tremendously from the insights, support, and encouragement of Newton residents, City staff, and elected officials.

From these efforts, we established Newton Conversations to continue the work of creating a space for structured conversations with Newton residents about topics of community interest. Our approach is to create a constructive environment for discussing local issues through carefully planned dialogues with our trained community facilitators.

We are inviting people who live, work, and play in Newton to join us in working through diverse viewpoints on topics facing Newton. Our purpose is to foster active listening and promote civil discourse.

To learn more about our initiative, please join us at one of our upcoming events in March.

  • To experience the practice of dialogue, attend a mini-dialogue, 9AM-10:15AM on either March 16 or 20. Participation will be capped at 12 for each mini-dialogue. (RSVP is optional, however, for planning purposes, we’d appreciate it.)
  • If you’re ready for a deeper experience, join our Community Dialogue at 3:45 PM on Sunday, March 22. Participation will be capped at 35 for this event. (RSVP is required.)
