Newton Family Singers: Music of R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls, May 9

The Newton Family Singers invites you to join them on Saturday, May 9 at 4PM to celebrate the music of R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls, two decade-defining bands who came out of Athens, Georgia. This season they’re performing at the Newton Community Stage at the Lincoln-Eliot School (15 Walnut Park, Newtonville).

Adult tickets are $15 if purchased before May 2 and $20 if purchased after May 2 or at the door. Kids’ tickets (12 and under) are always $15.

The trajectory of the Indigo Girls’ career mimics the path carved by R.E.M., often passing through the exact same physical spaces. Both bands’ spiritual home became the Athens clubs.

The 40 Watt Club stands out as the central hub of their shared history.  Even decades later, in December 2022, the Indigo Girls returned to the 40 Watt to perform at the 40th Anniversary celebration of R.E.M.’s Chronic Town EP, cementing the venue as a historical monument to their shared lineage. Keep your eyes open around town for the Newton Family Singers flyer, and see if you can pick out “40 Watt” imagery.
