LigerBots win Division championship at World Competition for second year in a row

For the second year in a row, the LigerBots, Newton’s dual-high school FIRST Robotics team, not only qualified for the FRC World Championship but in that competition also won a Division championship, placing the team among the top 24 to 32 teams worldwide. Last year, the LigerBots alliance won the Hopper Division, and this year, their alliance won the Johnson Division.

The FRC World Championship, held in Houston, brings together the top 600 FRC teams worldwide, and the LigerBots qualified for that group through their performance at the New England District Championship in April. Through preliminary rounds in the eight divisions of the FRC World Championship, eight championship alliances (of three or sometimes four teams each) emerge as the Division Champions. The LigerBots competed in the Johnson Division as the third pick of the alliance that won that division title.

On the Einstein field (the “Super Bowl” of FRC), the LigerBots alliance lost the first round, then won its way back in the lower bracket in the second round, only to lose again in the third round. This was further progress than last year, and the LigerBots they plan to build on this streak next year.
