City Council Meetings – Week of 6/7/2026

City Council is not scheduled to meet this week.

Zoning & Planning Committee will meet in person (City Hall, Room 207) and virtually (Zoom link) on Monday, June 8 at 7PM. The agenda includes:

  • Public Hearing: Ordinance change in Chapter 30 to allow raised beds in the front and rear setback under certain conditions
  • Request for information on expiring deed restrictions and options to maintain them as affordable units (see spreadsheet)
  • Request to amend the MR zones to encourage preservation of existing buildings
  • Presentation on Town of Brookline Rezoning at Route 9 & Hammond Street

Finance Committee will meet in person (City Hall, Room 211) and virtually (Zoom link) on Monday, June 8 at 7PM. The agenda includes:

  • Authorization to appropriate and expend $550,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash for SAN replacement
  • Appropriation of $150,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash for netting at the Halloran Sports Complex Multi-Purpose Field
  • Authorization to accept and expend a grant of $3,275.15 from the Department of Fire Services to purchase smoke and CO detectors for Newton’s older adults
  • Appropriation of $225,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash for Police firearm equipment replacement
  • Appropriation of $105,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash to support the Police Department
  • Authorization to transfer $277,499 from the Energy Stabilization Fund for the installation of heat pumps at Fire Station 2
  • Transfer of $100,000 for increased water and sewer usage
  • CPC recommendation to appropriate $347,534.91 for War Memorial Stairs
  • Authorization to accept and expend a grant of $150,000 from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Complete Streets Funding Program for the continued design of traffic calming improvements in Newton Highlands
  • Authorization to accept a low-interest loan of $4,329,664 from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust State Revolving Fund for Fiscal Year 2027 construction of stormwater projects at Cold Spring Park, Cabot Dog Park, and potentially Braceland Park
  • Transfer of $900,000 for improvements to roadways, sidewalks, and ramps
  • Appropriation of $3,000,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash for Transportation and Paving Improvement Program
  • Appropriation of up to $2,792,700 from Water Budget Reserves for Fiscal Year 2027 water main improvements
  • Appropriation of $135,000 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash to complete upgrades to fuel stations at Crafts Street and Elliot Street Yards
  • Appropriation of $577,175 from June 30, 2025 Certified Free Cash to purchase two multipurpose Trackless vehicles and two Snowrator machines for winter maintenance and sweeping operations
  • Transfer of $200.00 for reconciliation

Traffic Council will meet in person (City Hall, Room 211) and virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, June 11 at 7PM. The agenda includes:

  • Accessible parking space in front of 17–19 Beech Street
  • Parking restriction on Cynthia Road at the corner of Greenwood Street up to the driveway of 5 Cynthia Road
  • Extend the “No Parking Except Sundays and Holidays” restriction on the north side of Suffolk Road further west to the Church of the Redeemer Driveway
  • Change to parking regulations on the north side of Otis Street between Lowell Avenue and Walden Street
  • Trial or permanent change to parking regulations on one side of Lowell Avenue between Elm Road and Highland Avenue
  • Review and possible change to parking regulations along both sides of Highland Avenue between Lowell Avenue and Walnut Street, and parking programs within the Austin Street Municipal Lot
  • Continue the Traffic Council trial allowing vehicles displaying TIGER permits to park in the Austin Street Lot without payment on school days
