What’s Up in Newton – Week of 5/24/2026

Highlights this week…

  • Memorial Day …Monday, 10AM services at Newton Cemetery. Schools and non-emergency government buildings closed.
  • City Council …meeting as Committee of the Whole to deliberate on Mayor’s FY27 Budget, Capital Improvement Plan, and Supplemental Capital Improvement Plan
  • Ward and Underwood Community Meeting …on possible school consolidation
  • Bullough’s Pond Dam …virtual community meeting and on-site walk

City Council

City Council will meet as a Committee of the Whole on both Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss and possibly vote on the Mayor’s proposed FY27 Budget, Capital Improvement Plan, and Supplemental Capital Improvement Plan.

The Council is expected to vote on the following (see Tuesday’s Reports Docket):

  • Approval of the Newton Retirement Board’s increase to the retiree Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) base from $15,000 to $16,000 in FY27, to $17,000 in FY28, and to $18,000 in FY29

School Committee

School Committee is not scheduled to meet this week.

Ward and Underwood Elementary School Community Meeting will be held virtually on Tuesday. COO Josh Morse will discuss the question of consolidating the Ward and Underwood Elementary Schools and present his current recommendation that they not be consolidated.

Ward School Council will meet on Wednesday.


Boards and Commissions

Newton Retirement Board will meet Tuesday, with a long agenda including a PRIM presentation, a actuarial presentation, enrollment forms discussion, and several disability retirement applications.

Newton Fair and Affordable Housing Partnership will meet virtually on Tuesday regarding:

  • City of Newton OneStop Application for Compliant ADUs
  • State Legislative Initiatives with CHAPA
  • Lottery/Lease Up Discussion
  • Rent Control Forum update
  • Newton Affordable and Accessible Rental Housing Inventory update

Newton Commonwealth Golf Foundation Board will meet Tuesday regarding change order approval for irrigation work on holes #10 and #11 (new cost $133,000), parking lot expansion update, and $29,000 payment for hole #13 golf design work.

Council on Aging will meet Tuesday regarding the Newton WHO/AARP Age Friendly City Overview, Newton City Ordinances Codification, and OAS FY27 Budget.

UMass at Charles River Campus and Oak Hill Neighborhood Council will meet Wednesday regarding UMass updates, neighborhood updates, and Wells Avenue Office Park updates.

Newton Free Library Board of Trustees will meet Wednesday regarding the Director Search, Bookmobile, and FY27 Budget including review of the Library’s capital needs.

Zoning Board of Appeals will meet Wednesday regarding a Comprehensive Permit under Chapter 40B for a 234-unit residential development at 19 Court Street, 21 Court Street, 34–50 Crafts Street, including 59 affordable units.

Newton Cultural Council will meet Thursday regarding feedback on grantee events, a community survey, and a report from the Arts & Culture Department.

Bullough’s Pond Dam Virtual Community Meeting will be held Thursday.

Newton Energy Commission will meet Thursday regarding next steps on Clark student presentations, smaller buildings update, GSEP/Electrification, and state legislation regarding pulling back from 2030 goals.

Conservation Commission will meet Thursday regarding a Notice of Intent for a free-standing ADU at 242 Islington Road, a Minor Plan Change at 152 Suffolk Road, and possible violation of unpermitted stairs at 500 Dudley Road.

Sustainable Materials Management Commission will meet on Thursday regarding the City’s Climate Action Plan, enforcement resources for SMMD, and developing a public waste and recycling dashboard.

Bullough’s Pond Dam On-Site Walk will be held Friday at 8:30AM at the dam site on Dexter Road.

Newton Historical Commission meeting scheduled for Thursday has been cancelled.


Other

Development Review Team will meet this week regarding the following potential project/proposals:

  • 23 Smith Court: Construction of a new detached accessory dwelling unit
  • 36 Billings Park: Basement/first story addition to single-family home, exceeding FAR
