  • MBTA Newtonville Station project …public meeting on Wednesday regarding project status
  • Last day of school …on Thursday (Wednesday for NECP)
  • Nonantum Village Day …on Sunday, June 28 (rescheduled from June 7)

City Council

City Council is not scheduled to meet this week.

Zoning & Planning will meet on Monday regarding:

  • Zoning amendment to allow transformers to project into the setback (This is likely to be held until July 20 meeting, when Eversource can attend.)
  • Zoning amendments for residential developments within Business Use (BU) lots, focusing on alignment of setbacks, height, FAR, etc. for properties in and adjacent to residential neighborhoods

Finance will meet on Monday regarding:

  • Potential lease for third-party solar energy generation at Burr Elementary School, 191 Pine Street
  • Repurposing $150,000 and transferring $177,000 for shower/locker room renovations at Fire Station 2
  • Transferring:
    • $1,175,000 to Police Patrol Services for contractual FY27 wage increases
    • $900,000 from DPW Street Division wages to Snow/Ice Control
    • $710,000 for retroactive wage adjustments for Police Patrol, Police Traffic Safety, and DPW Engineering

School Committee

School Committee will meet in Executive Session on Monday to discuss:

  • Negotiation strategy regarding the Newton Teachers Association
  • Litigation update on Sumner v. Newton Public Schools

School Committee will meet on Monday regarding a vote on the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Newton Teachers Association (NTA).


Boards and Commissions

Cultural Council will meet Monday regarding:

  • Cultural Council membership: Kasha Gauthier
  • Community survey planning (grantee interviews, quantitative survey)
  • Grantee reception and adjudication process
  • NCC Directed Program — amount, options, and determination process
  • West Newton Arts District organization/development
  • Department of Arts and Culture report

Council on Aging will meet Tuesday regarding:

  • Age Friendly Newton planning across ten focus areas (arts & culture, housing, transportation, etc.)
  • Department of Older Adult Service update, including Cooper Center updates
  • Newton City Ordinances codification — Chapter 14 and COA Bylaws

Newton Retirement Board will meet Tuesday regarding:

  • Interviews for Director position
  • School HR/Payroll enrollment forms discussion
  • Request to invoke a 2022 DALA decision on behalf of a member
  • Deputy Director and Administrative Assistant pay increases effective July 1
  • Two member survivor allowance requests
  • New applications for superannuation and termination retirement
  • Office security discussion (possible Executive Session)

Design Review Committee will meet Wednesday regarding:

  • Draft Sustainability Guidelines 2026 Update
  • Project feasibility study updates:
    • Police Headquarters and Training Facility
    • Newton South High School
    • Ward Elementary School and Underwood Elementary School

Newton Commonwealth Golf Foundation Board will meet Wednesday regarding:

  • IW Harding Co. drainage project payment dispute
  • Election of Foundation officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Clerk)
  • Change in Treasurer and accounting practices
  • Search for a consultant to assist with the next golf course management RFP

Newton Energy Commission will meet Wednesday regarding:

  • GSEP/Electrification
  • Summer interns from GreenNewton
  • BERDO updates
  • Smaller Buildings update

Newton Historical Commission will meet Thursday regarding:

  • Total demolitions:
    • House at 166 Greenwood Street
    • House, garage, and greenhouse at 154 Beaumont Avenue
    • House and garage at 26 Taft Avenue
    • House and garage at 188-190 Adams Street
    • House at 5-7 Cook Street
  • Partial demolition of house at 300 Waverley Avenue

Sustainable Materials Management Commission will meet Thursday regarding:

  • CAP 2.0 guidance
  • Recycling audit and financial impact analysis
  • Street sweeping inquiry
  • Pharmaceutical disposal
  • Brookline School Tour update

Urban Tree Commission will meet on Friday regarding:

  • Forestry Department update
  • Tree removal requests

Other

MBTA Capital Engagement will host a Public Meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 6PM-7PM to provide an update on the status of the Newtonville Station Accessibility Improvements Project. The meeting will be held in person (Cooper Center, Multipurpose Room, 345 Walnut Street, Newtonville) and virtually (Zoom registration). The project is to create a new, fully-accessible (ADA/MAAB compliant) Newtonville Station on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line (flyer).

Nonantum Village Day will be on Sunday, June 28, 11:30AM-3PM (rescheduled from June 7).

Development Review Team will meet this week regarding the following potential project/proposals:

  • 22 Emerald Street: Extend nonconforming floor area ratio.
