The LigerBots, Newton’s dual-high-school FIRST Robotics team, won the Greater Boston FIRST Robotics Competition at Revere High School over the March 27-29 weekend, leading a field of 37 teams in a close finish to earn entry to the District Championships, April 15-18.
Through the 74-match qualifying round, the LigerBots (team FRC 2877) advanced through the bracket until falling to the top-seeded alliance in the semifinals. As the second overall seed, the LigerBots led an alliance with teams FRC 151 and FRC 190 in the semi-finals to reach a best-of-three final against that first seed. In the final, the LigerBots alliance won the opening match by 4 points, lost the second, and won the decisive third match, also by 4 points (351-347).

The team also earned three FIRST awards at the Greater Boston event:
- The Engineering Inspiration Award recognized the team’s commitment to advancing engineering culture.
- Team member Felicia Ji was named a semifinalist for the FIRST Leadership Award, advancing to District Championships to compete against other district qualifiers.
- Coach Chris was nominated for the Woodie Flowers Award, which honors mentors for their impact on students and the broader FIRST community.
Two weeks earlier, the LigerBots had won the FIRST Impact Award at the North Shore qualifier in Reading. This is FIRST’s highest honor, recognizing teams that best model outreach and community engagement.
The LigerBots team has now qualified to compete with more than 70 of New England’s top FIRST Robotics teams at the District Championships in Springfield, April 15-18.
