  • City Council FY27 Budget Calendar …has been released, showing five weeks of deliberations following Mayor’s Budget Address on April 27
  • School Committee …reviewing FY27 Budget Review and taking a Straw Vote
  • State Rep. Greg Schwartz …holding office hours on Monday at City Hall
  • Mayor Marc Laredo …holding a virtual public meeting on Thursday, the last of his current Laredo Listens tour
  • Yard waste curbside collection …begins this week and runs until December 11

City Council

City Council is not scheduled to meet this week.

Zoning & Planning Committee will meet Monday regarding:

  • Pre-budget planning discussion with the Planning Department, Inspectional Services Department, and CPA Program Manager to prepare for the FY27 Budget Review
  • Update on Short-term Rental ordinance compliance and enforcement

Finance Committee will meet Monday regarding authorizations to

  • Repurpose $150,000 for the renovation of the Fire Station 2 bathroom
  • Transfer $46,500 from Accessibility Parking Fines for accessible improvements at the intersection of Walker and Proctor Streets in Newtonville

Land Use Committee will meet Tuesday regarding requests for Special Permits to:

  • Further extend nonconforming FAR and lot coverage at 199 Otis Street
  • Allow an oversized dormer, extending a nonconforming 3.5-story structure, and to further extend nonconforming FAR at 25-27 Lewis Street

FY27 Budget Calendar has been released for the five weeks of City Council deliberations, kicked off by the Mayor’s Budget Address on April 27.


School Committee

Newton School Committee will meet Monday regarding:

  • Superintendent’s Update and prior budget questions
  • Policy re: Parent Advisory Council
  • FY27 Budget Review and Straw Vote

School Committee Brown Bag Learning Lunch will meet Friday to discuss Special Education/METCO.

Newton Cultural Council will meet Monday regarding:

  • Discussion of NCC grant criteria and Newton-specific requirements
  • Initial planning for community survey

Dangerous/Nuisance Dog Complaint Hearing will meet Monday regarding a review of a dangerous/nuisance dog complaint (T-Rex).

Newton Commonwealth Foundation Board will meet Tuesday regarding:

  • RFP for #6 green, 7 wall, and #10 tee for bid of $657,977.65 from Weed & Feed
  • Confirm 2026 greens fee and golf cart pricing and lead times for tee times

Council on Aging will meet Tuesday regarding:

  • Update on City of Newton coordination

Newton Historical Commission will meet Thursday regarding:

  • Total demolition: 51 Pratt Drive
  • Partial demolitions: 218 Melrose Street, 97 Hawthorne Avenue, 11 Frances Street, 11-15 Suban Place
  • Waivers of demolition delay: 61 Broadway, 51 Carl Street (partial), 34 Palmer Road (partial), 40 Butts Street

Sustainable Materials Management Commission will meet Thursday regarding:

  • 2025 Annual Report review and approval
  • Discuss potential response to NPS
  • Updates on upcoming tours (Anaerobic Digestion facility, Resource Roxbury)

Other

State Rep. Greg Schwartz will hold office hours in person on Monday, 9:30AM-11AM at Newton City Hall, Room 211.

Mayor Marc Laredo will hold the last in his current series of Laredo Listens meetings with the public. It will be held virtually on Thursday (register for Zoom link).

Development Review Team will meet this week regarding the following potential project/proposals:

  • 9 Nardell Road: Retaining wall over 4 feet
  • 99 Oakdale Road: Special permit to exceed FAR and for a three-story addition
  • 24 Vernon Street: Four single family attached dwellings
